Puffin (Fratercula arctica), off Sálvora island (Alfonso Santamaría) |
We still have avaliable 'seats' for most of our pelagics in 2014. These are:
Pelagic of the dolphins 10/5/2014 (alternative date: 17/5/2014). Risso's (Grampus griseus), common (Delphinus delphis) and bottle-nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are possible sightings in this pelagic, with skuas and shearwaters as bonus.
Pelagic of the shearwaters 15/6/2014 (alternative date: 22/6/2014). Groups of Balearic (Puffinus mauretanicus) and Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea borealis) are almost guaranteed, and perhaps first flocks of European storm-petrels (Hydrobates pelagicus) will show up.
Pelagic of the storm-petrels 19/7/2014. Good date both for Wilson's (Oceanites oceanicus) and European storm-petrels, and also for shearwaters. We will keep and eye for an eventual minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)!
Pelagic of the skuas 16/8/2014. Excellent date for Arctic (Stercorarius parasiticus), great and even Pomarine skuas (S. pomarinus), and also for Wilson's and European storm-petrels. Chance for the first Sabine's gulls (Xema sabini) of the year.
Pelagic of the Sabine's gull 6/9/2014 (alternative date: 13/9/2014). We still have in mind those pelagics in early September 2012 (here) and 2013 (here) with a good Sabine's gulls' flocks. Although this beauty is the target of the pelagic, skuas, storm-petrels and dolphins are almost guaranteed.
Pelagic of the big list 20/9/2014 (27/9/2014). Perhaps the most attactive date for pelagics, as summer visitors (as Wilson's storm-petrels and Sabine's gulls) are still around and autumn migrants (such as great shearwater Puffinus gravis and Arctic terns Sterna paradisaea) are on the move.
Pelagic of the whales 11/10/2014 (alternative date: 18/10/2014). After the unforgetable pelagic in mid-October 2013 (see here), we will try to spot some minke whales offshore, with common and bottle-nosed dolphins almost guaranteed and harbour porpoise as a bonus. Interesting birds, such as Pomarine skua or great shearwater are likely.
Late pelagic 15/11/2014 (alternative date: 22/11/2014). Last pelagic of the year will be performed by mid-November, with grey phalarope (Phalaropus fulicaria), little gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus), kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) and Leach's storm-petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) as targets.
A Lanzada bay 13/12/2014 (alternative date: 20/12/2014). 2014 ends with this route inside the 'ría' of Arousa and across A Lanzada bay. Great Northern divers (Gavia immer), common scoters (Melanitta nigra) and razorbills will delight the participants as are common in that month in the area.
